Wayne State University ranks high in workplace satisfaction among scientists, magazine survey finds

DETROIT -- Wayne State University is among the top academic institutions in the country from the standpoint of workplace satisfaction for life scientists, as ranked by the trade publication The Scientist. The rankings are based on results of the magazine’s Web survey of readers engaged in the life sciences. Wayne State was named among the top 14 of 58 U.S. institutions that were ranked.

The magazine asked for responses from tenured, permanent and tenure-track life scientists, asking them to rate the quality of work experience at their academic or non-commercial workplace. There were more than 1,600 responses from 58 U.S. institutions, seven in Canada and 10 in the United Kingdom. Detailed information on the survey is available at www.the-scientist.com/bptw

For the second year in a row, “personal fulfillment” was rated the No. 1 factor in determining workplace satisfaction. Also ranked high by respondents were peer relations, institutional management and tenure procedures. Institutions earning high marks in those categories took top honors this year.

Other Michigan academic institutions in the top 14 are Michigan State University and Calvin College. Ranking first in the country was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Topping the list for Canada was Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, followed by the University of Alberta.

Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 11 schools and colleges to more than 33,000 students.
