Media Advisory : The Friends of the Freer House are hosting a lecture by Dr. Thomas Brunk

WHAT: The Friends of the Freer House are hosting a lecture by Dr. Thomas Brunk entitled ‘Charles Lang Freer and the Arts and Crafts Movement in Detroit’. The lecture will include rare photos of the Arts and Crafts headquarters on Watson Street in Detroit. It will be followed by refreshments and tours of the Freer House.

WHEN: Sunday, November 5, 2006 at 3pm. This lecture is open to the public. Suggested donation is $5.00 per person. Members of the Friends of Freer House and students are free.

WHERE: The Merrill-Palmer Institute, Wayne State University, 71 East Ferry Detroit, MI 48202.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. Many cultural institutions in Detroit have links to this important organization including the College for Creative Studies, Cranbrook, Pewabic Pottery and the DIA.

Its early members included leaders like George Booth, Albert Kahn, Mary Chase Perry and Charles L. Freer, as well as artists, craftspeople, designers and performers. The Society was the epicenter of the Arts and Crafts movement in Detroit and substantially influenced the cities 20th design and architecture.

The Friends of the Freer House is a committee of the Merrill-Palmer Institute of Wayne State University dedicated to the restoration of this landmark, The Charles Lang Freer House. The Merrill-Palmer Institute purchased the Freer House in 1919 from Freer\'s estate and established a renowned school devoted to child and family development. Wayne State University purchased the property 1981.
