DETROIT NATIVE WALTER WHITE RETURNS TO PERFORM AT WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY

DETROIT, MI (September 15, 2006) – The Wayne State University Department of Music is proud to welcome Fall 2006 Artist-in-Residence Walter White to campus October 2-8 and November 21-28. White will be performing on two occasions at Wayne State, Sunday, October 8 at 3 p.m. and Tuesday, November 28 at 7:30 p.m. Both concerts will be held in the Schaver Music Recital Hall, located on campus at 480 W. Hancock, Detroit. Admission to the October 8 concert is free. Tickets for the November 28 performance are $5 and $8 and can be purchased at-the-door. Walter White is globally respected as one of the leading trumpeters in the world, in both classical and jazz genres. He will be the featured soloist in the October 8 performance of “Africa Meets America”, original quintet music that explores South Africa’s musical roots, which was premiered at the 2006 South Africa National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa. Also performing will be Wayne State Music faulty Chris Collins, Dennis Tini, and David Taylor, along with bassist Jeff Halsey. The second half of the concert will feature White’s original compositions for quintet. White’s November 28 performance will feature the WSU Big Band, under the direction of Chris Collins, performing his original Big Band music. This special concert will be a tribute to the late Maynard Ferguson.

Walter White grew up near Detroit, Michigan and studied at Interlochen, Julliard, the University of Miami, and The Banff Centre. He has worked with such artists as Maynard Ferguson, Bob James, Dave Holland, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He is currently performing with the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra and is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician. His playing has been heard in soundtracks for both television and motion pictures, including the network sit-coms “Taxi” and “The Cosby Show”.
