DETROIT, August 2006 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through its Health Resources and Services Administration (HSRA), has awarded a $1.2 million grant to the Wayne State University College of Nursing on behalf of the nurse-managed Campus Health Center at Wayne State, the first on-campus clinic for WSU students in nearly 30 years.
The three-year grant will allow the Center to expand and supplement its primary care services to the more than 3,600 students who will be living in Wayne State residence halls this fall. The Center is operated by the Nursing Practice Corporation, a nonprofit organization comprised of faculty from the College of Nursing, and staffed by faculty nurse practitioners, all of whom are nationally certified in their areas of specialty.
“This grant gives us an opportunity to serve the health needs of the students who reside on campus and the clinical educational needs for nursing students,” says WSU College of Nursing Dean Barbara K. Redman. “This is truly a win-win situation or the College of Nursing and Wayne State University.”
Created in 2005, the Campus Health Center is officially open and fully operational this fall for incoming students after a three-semester pilot phase period. On March 1, the Center moved from cramped temporary quarters into its new 1,250 square-foot location on the main floor of the Helen DeRoy Apartment Building on Anthony Wayne Drive.
Available health services at the Campus Health Center include immunizations, acute and chronic illness care, physical examinations, allergy injections, TB testing, diagnostic testing, annual exams for women and medical clearances for health profession programs.
Dr. Stephen J. Cavanagh, RN, associate dean for academic and clinical affairs at the College of Nursing, is principal investigator for the Center’s clinical education component. Mary P. White, RN, MSN, adult nurse practitioner and clinical instructor at the Wayne State College of Nursing, is director of the Campus Health Center.
