David A. Brandon, chairman and CEO of Domino’s Pizza, will receive the Michigan Executive of the Year Award from the Wayne State University School of Business Administration during the 2006 Annual Recognition and Awards Program. The ceremony and banquet will be held at the Detroit Marriott–Renaissance Center on Tuesday, April 18. Richard M. Gabrys, interim dean, will preside over the event, which will attract some 400 guests.
At Domino’s, Brandon has assembled a strong leadership team with extensive knowledge of the industry combined with specialty skills that drive balanced strategic decisions. By overlaying a team spirit of “smart hustle” and innovation, company profits have increased dramatically, and Brandon led the successful completion of Domino’s initial public offering as the largest quick-service restaurant IPO in history. He is a resident of Ann Arbor.
For the first time, the business school will make two awards to outstanding alumni. A Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to Paul A. Glantz, Senior Vice President and CFO of Proctor Financial and president of Emagine Entertainment. A Distinguished Alumna Award will be conferred upon Sandra E. Pierce, president and CEO of Charter One Bank, Michigan & Indiana. She lives in Novi.
Glantz received a degree in accounting from the WSU School of Business Administration. He has had substantial experience through progressively more responsible positions in finance, insurance, real estate, and cinematic exhibition. As CFO of Proctor Financial, he successfully managed the sale of Proctor to Brown & Brown Inc., a leading NYSE national insurance brokerage firm. As President of Emagine Entertainment, Glantz has been at the forefront of technological change in the theatre industry, particularly with the transition to high-definition digital presentation of cinema. He is a resident of Bloomfield Hills.
Pierce earned a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the WSU School of Business Administration. She began her successful and diverse banking career in 1978 when she joined NBD Bancorp as a teller while attending Wayne State University. She has held a number of significant roles in commercial banking, retail banking, marketing, and private client services. In her current role as president and CEO of Charter One Bank, Michigan & Indiana, Piece oversees more than 1,400 employees and is responsible for all local business, community, and charitable giving decisions.
Two faculty members will receive the School of Business Administration’s Distinguished Research Awards: Toni M. Somers, associate professor of information systems and manufacturing, and Attila Yaprak, professor of marketing and international business. A resident of Bloomfield Hills, Somers’ research focuses on linking business strategies and requirements with the most appropriate selection and implementation of technology. Yaprak is internationally recognized for his research on global marketing issues. He resides in Ann Arbor.
Ranjan D’Mello, associate professor of finance, will receive the school’s Distinguished Teacher Award. He offers a comprehensive and real-life perspective for his corporate finance students by actively integrating research findings and current events in the educational experience. He is a resident of Troy.
James E. Martin, professor of management, will receive the Board of Visitors Faculty Fellow Award. The three-year appointment includes an annual $5,000 stipend. A resident of Bloomfield Village, Dr. Martin specializes in labor relations and human resource management research and teaching. Members of the Board of Visitors serve in an advisory capacity for the school.
A primary feature of the evening’s event is the awarding of more than $500,000 in scholarships to 118 outstanding School of Business Administration students. The half-million dollars in scholarships marks the highest level of student support at the School. Funding includes scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, newly admitted graduate students and freshmen, and supports the recruitment of incoming freshmen.
