Wayne State University pays tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

DETROIT, MI (April 6, 2006) – The Wayne State University Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will celebrate the birth of Mozart on Monday, April 17. The concert, which starts at 7 p.m., is being held in the Community Arts Auditorium located on campus at 5451 Cass Avenue. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $8 for general admission. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, the University Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus, under the direction of Kypros Markou, are paying homage to the composer with a tribute concert. The concert will feature Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture and Coronation Mass. The University Orchestra will also perform the “Theme and Variations” from Tchaikovksy’s “Mozartiana” Suite. Mozart himself wrote the “Theme”. Inspired by his favorite composer, Tchaikovsky composed other Mozart-like works such as Serenade for Strings.

Wayne State Music is celebrating 87 years of artistic and academic excellence. The Department’s faculty includes renowned jazz artists, composers, scholars, educators and members of the internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra. WSU alumni have gone on to careers in distinguished orchestras, ensembles and as soloists and music educators the world over.
