DETROIT, MI (March 21, 2006) – Wayne State University Department of Music proudly hosts the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet on Monday, April 3 for a guitar master class. The Grammy Award winning quartet will critique Wayne State guitar students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Schaver Music Recital Hall, 480 W. Hancock, Detroit. One of America’s premier instrumental ensembles, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is charismatic, energetic and dynamic. The four seasoned virtuosi are popularly known as the LAGQ and have received critical acclaim for their transcriptions of concert masterworks. The four members,
John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tenant, and Andrew York have set new standards for the guitar medium with their fresh, ground breaking eclectic programs. The quartet has performed worldwide, including recitals in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia. In 2004, they were featured at the first World Guitar Congress in Baltimore.
The LAGQ has recorded three CDs on Telarc and two CDs for SONY Classical. Their “Guitar Heroes”, released on Telarc, received a Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album and their first Telarc CD, “LAGQ – Latin”, received a 2003 Grammy Award nomination and also won the award for “Best Made for Surround” at the 1st Annual Surround Music Awards. Their most recent CD, “LAGQ Spin”, is being released on Telarc this month.
LAGQ’s recent radio appearances have included National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” and Minnesota Public Radio’s “St. Paul Sunday Morning”. They have also been featured in a nationally broadcast performance with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops on PBS’s “Evening at Pops”, as well as featured performances on CNN’s “Show Biz Today”, CBS’s “Saturday Morning” and A&E Network’s “Breakfast with the Arts”.
