Wayne State University’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies (CPCS) is saddened to note the passing of its former director, Lillian Genser. Mrs. Genser suffered a stroke in February and died from complications March 9 at a hospital in Sarasota, Fla., near her family\'s Long Boat Key winter home. She was 86.
Her role at Wayne State University began during the CPCS’s formative years. She served as director of CPCS from 1970-1990 touching the lives of countless people -- students, staff, administration and faculty -- across the entire campus and throughout the community; and on the airwaves during her frequent broadcasts on WDET FM.
Mrs. Genser was a tireless advocate of humanitarian values and the welfare and rights of children. Her legacy is retained in many of the Center\'s programs, including the Lillian Genser Internship in Peace Through the Arts. She was recognized with a career distinguished service award from Wayne State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during the center\'s 40th anniversary celebration in November 2005.
In addition to her son Don, Mrs. Genser is survived by her husband, Oscar Genser; another son, Howard Genser; a brother, and a grandson.
A memorial service is planned for noon Friday at the Ira Kaufman Chapel, 18325 W. Nine Mile in Southfield.
The family has requested that tribute donations be made payable to: Lillian Mellen Genser Fund for Peace and Human Rights Through the Arts (account no. 447116). Donations may be mailed to the WSU Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, 2320 FAB, Detroit, MI 48220, Attn: Lillian M. Genser Fund.
