Desperate for another hit

Detroit\'s big sedans once ruled the road, offering comfort and luxury before the advent of seven-seat SUVs and roomy minivans. Now those decadent land yachts of yesteryear are showing fresh signs of a comeback. The Chrysler Group today will unveil a sprawling concept sedan called the Imperial at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit . And lest anyone thinks the Imperial -- which borrows a vaunted badge from Chrysler\'s heritage -- lacks sex appeal, Eva Longoria, the gardener-seducing siren from the TV show \"Desperate Housewives,\" will introduce the car to the world\'s automotive press. The Imperial show car, with its Rolls Royce Phantom-like silhouette, 22-inch wheels and sumptuous interior, comes on the heels of the runaway success of Chrysler\'s 300C -- which proved big, stylish sedans still can appeal to a wide audience. Its interior configuration invokes memories of Chrysler icon K.T. Keller\'s design philosophy. "He wanted cars to be designed so a man could get into it with his hat on,\" said Mike Smith, director of the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University .
