Wayne State University students becoming more adventurous

Jess Darland is the adventurous type. Darland, a Wayne State University junior chemistry major, is among a growing number of students participating in the WSU Outdoor Adventure Club, which annually plans ski, camping, climbing and whitewater rafting trips, many of which are out of state.

“We provide awesome opportunities to try new things and discover new interests,” said Darland, club president. “Different kinds of people participate in a friendly environment to cultivate new relationships. It is also a great resume booster because membership is indicative of a dynamic person.”

Noah Morgan, a WSU junior pre-medicine major, enjoys learning new skills. “I get away from my busy college schedule to have fun and try new things,” he said. “We have a blast. Events are well planned and organized.”

Graduate students are also increasingly catching the outdoor adventure bug. Chris Guyer, a fourth-year medical student, says medical students are interested in learning how to take care of common medical problems encountered in uncommon settings. “They are excited to use their knowledge,” he said. “This is a great way to take a break from the library, get involved with healthy activities and apply what they have learned in hands-on situations.”

Costs vary depending on the program. No prior training is necessary. Participants are expected to bring proper clothing and some basic camping gear.

“The activities are inherently team building and foster bonds between participants,” said Chris Nolan, assistant director, Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center, who oversees the club.
