Gerald R. Oglan named assistant dean at Wayne State University's College of Education

Gerald R. Oglan, former teacher in the Greater Essex County Public Schools in Windsor and associate professor at Wayne State University’s College of Education (COE), was recently named assistant dean of teacher education at the COE. \"Gerald

In this role, he oversees all aspects of the operation of the Division of Teacher Education in the college. Oglan, a Windsor resident, was previously an associate professor for the college’s reading, language and literature program and also served as program coordinator for special education.

An internationally recognized scholar for his work in the areas of parents and literacy issues as well as how teachers can support children’s writing development, Oglan has served as a member of the executive committee for the National Council of Teachers of English and as past president of the International Whole Language Umbrella.

Prior to joining Wayne State in 1992 as a part-time faculty member, Oglan taught in the Essex County schools for 20 years in the area of elementary education and served as assistant coordinator for primary/junior programs. He also was a language arts consultant.

Oglan earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Windsor and a doctoral degree from the University of South Carolina.
