(Detroit) December 5, 2005—In the final quarter of 2005, six new tenants have signed leases at TechTown, Detroit’s only research and technology park. The incoming group of entrepreneurs raises the total number of resident companies to 21.
Thanks to significant business growth and foot traffic, the park’s first retail entrepreneur has chosen to relocate to TechOne from another area in the city. The Java Exchange—a unique coffee shop that serves customers with financial education in addition to smoothies, sweets and coffee drinks—is slated to open to the public in February 2006.
“Our original plan was to expand to 40 companies in 10 years. We couldn’t be more pleased that just 16 months after our first tenant moved in, we are more than half way toward achieving that goal,” says Howard Bell, TechTown’s executive director. TechTown’s new tenants are:
21st Century Therapeutics: A drug discovery company that develops and commercializes new, experimental anticancer drugs targeted against human solid tumors.
Beyond Digital: A 3D animation and digital media development house that produces animations for use in numerous applications, including web design and video game development.
Consolidated Electric Technology Associates: A contractor that provides electrical installation services and pre-construction engineering services for commercial and industrial clients.
GradeCheck: An academic counseling and scholarship services company that helps high school students get accepted into college and guides student-athletes through the process of obtaining NCAA eligibility.
Walker-Miller Energy Services: An energy management systems company that empowers consumers of traditional and alternative energy to monitor their own consumption using new meter technology.
The Java Exchange: A coffee and cyber café, formerly known as The Wall Street Café, that provides customers with desktop computer stations, free wireless Internet access and opportunities to learn about entrepreneurship and finance through in-store events.
TechTown empowers entrepreneurs to build successful technology businesses that improve the quality of life for people across the country and around the world. At TechTown, we provide the support and access to capital needed to build high tech companies in Detroit. We are a community of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, service providers and corporate partners. For more information about TechTown and its tenants, visit www.TechTownWSU.org.
