Wayne State and Detroit Symphony Orchestra Combine Forces To Support Talented Music Students
DETROIT, MI (October 20, 2005) – The Wayne State University Department of Music, in conjunction with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, announce a new, joint initiative to support future WSU music majors. The “WSU/DSO Scholarships in Music” will support five music students beginning in fall 2006.
Eligible scholarship recipients must be members of a DSO Civic ensemble and plan to enroll in one of WSU Music’s six Bachelor of Music degrees in performance, jazz studies, music education, management, technology, or theory/composition. These full-tuition scholarships will support the recruitment of local undergraduate students. Each scholarship will be renewable up to four years, with a total cumulative value of more than $30,000. Funding for these scholarships has been generously provided by the WSU Office of the Provost.
The initial scholarships, awarded for the fall 2006 academic year, will be given to four string musicians and one piano student. Five additional awards will be made for the fall 2007, fall 2008 and fall 2009 academic years for a total of twenty renewable four-year scholarships.
The Wayne State University Department of Music is located in the heart of the University Cultural Center. The Department has long-standing collaborations throughout the community with such art organizations as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Sphinx Organization, and Chamber Music Society of Detroit. WSU Music faculty includes renowned jazz artists, composers, scholars, educators and members of the DSO. The Department offers 7 undergraduate degrees and 6 graduate degrees, as well as a Graduate Certificate in orchestral studies. WSU alumni have enjoyed successful careers in distinguished orchestras, ensembles, as well as soloists, composers, scholars and music educators in public schools, universities, conservatories, and schools of music.
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Ensembles Program offers Michigan’s most comprehensive pre-professional training program for orchestral, chamber and jazz musicians. The program offers world-class training and performance opportunities for students of all ability levels, ages 8 through 24, from throughout Southeast Michigan. The program has three symphonies, three jazz bands, a strings preparatory ensemble and a chamber music program. Students are trained by DSO education staff, DSO musicians and local jazz professionals; rehearse weekly at the Pincus Music Education Center at the Max M. Fisher Music Center; enjoy master classes with internationally renowned performers; and each ensemble performs a three-concert season at The Max.
