Future lawyers at Wayne State to chase ambulance around campus to raise funds for charity

The name is a gag and the event will raise money for a worthy cause. The 20th annual “Ambulance Chase,” set for 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Wayne State University, will have law students and other participants literally chasing an ambulance around campus.

Organized by the Student Bar Association Board of Governors at the WSU Law School, the event pokes fun at the stereotype of the ambulance-chasing lawyer. Donations from sponsors and from entry fees will go to Rise Sister Rise, a breast cancer survivor support group affiliated with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. Last year’s Ambulance Chase raised over $4,000 for a domestic violence shelter in the city.

The 2-mile course, dubbed the “Lawyers Loop,” will take participants around and through the WSU campus. Entrants who prefer a slower pace and a shorter route can sign up for the 1-mile “Warriors Walk.” (Warriors is the nickname of Wayne State’s athletic teams.) Also planned is a different kind of relay race in which competing teams will hand off briefcases rather than batons.

All events will start in front of the law school at Palmer Street, on the north side of the campus between Anthony Wayne Drive and Cass Avenue.

The honorary starter will be WSU Law School alumna Nancy Diehl, immediate past president of the State Bar of Michigan. The ambulance will be provided by Community EMS.

The public is invited to participate, and there is a $15 registration fee payable on race day. The first 160 entrants will receive a T-shirt, and all participants are invited to a barbecue-style reception at the law school following the events. Faculty members will be “celebrity chefs.”
