Five new food outlets will set up shop on Wayne State University’s main campus this fall, following the Sept. 12 opening of Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. The other eateries are Pizzeria Venti, Ms. Field’s cookies, TCBY frozen desserts, Pretzel Time and La Pita Mediterranean Grill.
The Jimmy John’s on Wayne State’s campus is owner Cliff Lunney’s third store in the city of Detroit; he owns eight in Metropolitan Detroit and two in Columbia, SC. Lunney, chief executive officer, CWL Investments LLC, will be building an additional nine stores in the Detroit area.
At WSU, Jimmy John’s is in South Hall at 5118 Anthony Wayne Drive, north of Warren Avenue. The menu includes $3.99 8-inch Sub Sandwiches on homemade French bread, with fresh vegetables, cheese and meats. The $4.99 Giant Club Sandwiches have twice the meat and cheese. For vegetarians, the shop offers two sandwiches.
Hours are 10:30 a.m.–11 p.m. Sunday–Wednesday and 10:30 a.m.–midnight Thursday–Saturday. Orders may be placed by calling (313) 832-7614 or faxing (313) 832-7628. Ordering will be available through the Web soon.
Pizzeria Venti
Pizzeria Venti is slated to open in Wayne State’s new Towers Residential Suites, on Reuther Mall, near the corner of Anthony Wayne Drive and Kirby Street, probably in November. The franchise features pizza made with ingredients such as Roma tomatoes and fresh basil; its products do not include hydrogenated fats or lard.
Mrs. Field’s, TCBY and Pretzel Time
Other franchises in The Towers will include one space housing Ms. Field’s cookies, TCBY frozen desserts and a Pretzel Time, offering hot, freshly baked pretzels. The shops are set to open later this year.
La Pita Mediterranean Grill
La Pita Mediterranean Grill is scheduled to open in November on Cass Avenue at Putnam Street next to Barnes & Noble bookstore.
Retail growth at Wayne State
Nabelah Ghareeb, WSU’s assistant vice president, Office of Business Operations, says the influx of retail businesses indicates the area’s growth. She explained that Einstein Bros Bagels, Starbucks and Subway opened on campus last year and earlier this year, and now the incoming businesses are following suit.
“It shows that Wayne State has a good reputation in the business community and that Midtown is becoming more and more of an attraction,” Ghareeb says.
Ghareeb added that a Barnes & Noble satellite store will open in The Towers in January 2006. The store will sell books, Wayne State clothing and convenience store items such as soft drinks and candy.
Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 11 schools and colleges to more than 33,000 students.
