Wayne
State has several efforts afoot to assist those affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The aid ranges from enrolling students displaced by Hurricane Katrina and providing mentors for those students, to replacing diplomas of WSU alums in the
Gulf
Coast region and fundraising efforts.
Some of those initiatives include:
· Warrior Friends: Faculty/staff members who volunteer will be paired with a student from the
Gulf
Coast area to assist them as a campus contact.
· Emergency Book Loan Fund: The office of financial aid has provided students with book loans. Any contributions to this fund will be used to defray the cost of those loans.
· Emergency School Supplies Bank: School supplies contributions for
Gulf
Coast students can be made via the Dean of Students office.
· Credential Replacement:
Wayne
State ’s Office of the Registrar is replacing diplomas of alums living in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina free of charge. Normally diplomas are replaced for a fee.
· Visiting Faculty:
Wayne
State ’s
School of
Business Administration will accept a limited number of visiting faculty from impacted universities for a period of one or two semesters.
· Clothing Drive:
Wayne
State ’s Dean of Students and the Office of Marketing and Publications are collecting household items including clothing and toiletries to assist students from the
Gulf
Coast now enrolled at
Wayne
State.
· Toy Drive: The Kappa Delta Sorority is collecting new and gently used toys for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
· Fundraising Drive: Sigma Pi Fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., the Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority, Sri Lankan Student Organization and WSU Student Council are conducting a hurricane relief fundraiser.
