NMU may see budget relieve in compromise plan

The long budget battle involving Lansing lawmakers and Upper Peninsula residents may finally be over. Gov. Jennifer Granholm and state legislative leaders have tentatively agreed on a plan that includes an increase in funding for all 15 public universities and for K-12 public schools. Under a new funding formula that rewarded universities based on enrollment, graduation rates in certain areas of study and amount of research being done, Northern Michigan and Wayne State universities would have experienced significant cuts. The formula is still in place but legislators were willing to compromise on how to apply the formula.
