DETROIT – Anthony Wayne Drive on the Wayne State University campus will be bustling with activity Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 29-30, as students arriving early for the fall term begin moving into the university’s new 900-bed residence hall and two other modern residential buildings opened in the same block during the past four years. The new residence halls fill a need expressed by students and their parents for additional on-campus housing that eliminates the need for long commutes and enhances the experience of university life.
The 11-story Towers Residential Suites, the latest addition to the Wayne State landscape, gives students the option of living in a one-, two-, three- or four-bedroom suite, with a shared living space and private baths. The building will house sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate, professional, medical and law students. In a departure from the cookie-cutter approach to room design that is common in some older college residential facilities, residents of The Towers can select from seven different suite styles (depending on availability), including some with individual bedrooms. Amenities include:
· A 400-person café-style dining facility
· Fitness facilities on every third floor
· Kitchenettes as well as social and study lounges on each floor
· Loft-style beds increase useable floor space
· 24-hour staff reception area with card entry to building, floors and suites
· Convenience store at ground level
Wayne State’s newest residence hall, a $51.5 million project, includes spacious, bi-level social lounges that offer an expansive view of the campus and the surrounding area. Living-Learning Communities, a concept that has proven popular in WSU’s other new residence facilities, will be extended to The Towers. With this arrangement, floor assignments are based on each student’s general area of academic interest.
The Towers Residential Suites consists of two nine-story wings and an 11-story center section. The building is adjacent to the university’s Student Center Building and near the Undergraduate Library and the Recreation and Fitness Center, which are among the most popular destinations for students on campus.
A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16.
