2005 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute hosted for high school students

For the third consecutive year, the Center for Peace & Conflict Studies (CPCS) at Wayne State University will host the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute for high school sophomores and juniors, June 20-24, at the main campus in Detroit.

During the week-long institute, high school sophomores and juniors from diverse districts throughout the metropolitan area will focus on topics of conflict resolution, diversity, negotiation, international affairs and how to individually foster peace within their own communities.

The purpose of the institute is to inform students about the life of Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, a distinguished diplomat, native Detroiter and the first person of color to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, while imparting multicultural skills for promoting harmony in their own lives, in our community and the world as a whole.

Students also will have the opportunity to fully experience campus life with an overnight stay in the new university residence halls. At the final assembly, all participating students will receive certificates for their dedication to learning about conflict resolution in the spirit of Dr. Bunche. Four students are chosen by their peers to be honored with Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Nobel Peace Prizes for their admirable efforts in peacemaking and leadership throughout the week's events.

The Institute is free and open to all qualifying area high school students; the registration deadline is May 20. For more information about the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute, including a registration packet, visit www.pcs.wayne.edu/about/institute.htm, or contact CPCS at (313) 577-3453.
