nanoScience Engineering Corporation obtains exclusive license to commercialize Wayne State University technology

DETROIT, MICHIGAN. nanoScience Engineering Corporation (nSEC) announced today that it has exclusively licensed technology from Wayne State University related to manufacturing advanced nano-scale fillers for enhancing the performance of plastics and rubber. The technology utilizes supercritical carbon dioxide, an environmentally friendly, reusable solvent, for producing exfoliated and custom-coated fillers dispersible in a polymer matrix. This novel method will make superior and economical polymer nanocomposites with improved strength, thermal stability, and reduced permeability. The enhanced properties will lead to numerous applications in the automotive and food packaging industries.

Prof. Esin Gulari, Prof. Charles W. Manke, Dr. Gulay Serhatkulu, and Prof. Rangaramanujam Kannan, of the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Department in WSU's College of Engineering, collectively developed this technology employing supercritical fluids.

nSEC was founded by David Burnett, co-founder and former president and CEO of Prizmalite Industries, Inc., James Braddock, Sr., former senior automotive purchasing executive and Prof. Esin Gulari, co-inventor of the patents in the nSEC portfolio.

David Burnett recently stated, "We believe this new technology will benefit a number of industries through enhancing properties of plastics and rubber. In the auto industry it will improve permeability control in fuel handling systems, and fire retardancy and heat deflection of insulation materials. We also feel our technology will be of great benefit to the food packaging industry by enhancing barrier properties."

According to Wayne State Vice President for Research John P. Oliver, "The work of nSEC is another example of how WSU researchers are taking the next step from innovation to implementation. They care about how their discoveries will impact industry and society." nSEC plans to locate their operations in Detroit.
