Wayne State University is noted in a sidebar item as a member of the Internet2 network which is used primarily by researchers on more than 200 college campuses. Internet2 is also used by several million university students, researchers and professionals worldwide, but is generally inaccessible to the public. Created in 1996, its inventors imagined a swifter Internet able to transmit loads of data free of spam and other interruptions.
