"Transatlantic Relations: On the Right Track?"

The Detroit Council of World Affairs (DCWA) will host a discussion with Glyn Davies, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, on Thursday, April 21, at Wayne State University's David Adamany Undergraduate Library. Davies' talk, titled "Transatlantic Relations: On the Right Track? An Overview of the State of Transatlantic Relations in the Second Bush Administration," is free and open to the general public.

The event will be held at Wayne State University's David Adamany Undergraduate Library, in the Community Room. Parking is available in structures 2 and 5 on Anthony Wayne Drive, and is $3.50. Attendance may be confirmed by contacting Kris Yurgin Cummings, (313) 577-8270 or ap0606@wayne.edu, by April 18.

Glyn Davies, a career Foreign Service Officer, has served in a variety of positions within the State Department. He assumed his responsibilities as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs in July 2004. In September 2003, the President chose Davies to serve in a year-long assignment as Political Director for the U.S. Presidency of the G-8 with the rank of Ambassador. From 1999 until 2003, Davies served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in London. He was appointed by former President Clinton as Executive Secretary of the National Security Council Staff in 1997, a position he held until 1999.

When asked about his upcoming presentation in Detroit, Davies referenced a quote from President Bush\'s speech at Concert Noble in Brussels, Belgium, delivered on Feb. 21, 2005. \"In a new century, the alliance of Europe and North America is the main pillar of our security. ...Our example of economic and political freedom gives hope to millions who are weary of poverty and oppression. ...Our strong friendship is essential to peace and prosperity across the globe--and no temporary debate, no passing disagreement of governments, no power on earth will ever divide us.\"

The event is sponsored by DCWA, a program within the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at Wayne State University. For more than a quarter century, DCWA has brought international speakers and presentations to the Detroit community, helping internationalize our important region.

The purpose of DCWA is to promote a deeper understanding of international issues as well as Detroit\'s role in a changing world by providing members with a non-partisan, nation-wide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. DCWA enriches local education, promotes a climate for long-term economic development and enhances individuals\' lives by accessing new, distinctive ideas and cultural perspectives.
