Wayne State is Dancing the Legacy, heralding the coming of spring and earning top honors

DETROIT (Mar. 8, 2005) - The Wayne State University Dance Companies will perform at the Bonstelle Theatre, March 25 and 26 in the 76th annual Spring Dance Gala: Dancing the Legacy. Tickets: $15 general admission at the door; $12 advanced purchase/student ID/seniors; Reservations: 313-577-4273. Dance CompanyONE, the ON STAGE! Touring Company, will perform a reconstruction of director Linda Cleveland Simmons\' Parlor Parley. The Wayne State University Dance Company, co-directed by Kelly Gottesman and Stephen Stone, will perform works by student choreographers Katie Bonbrisco (\'07) and Meghan Conway (\'07), as well as a body of repertory works by guest choreographers, including Jawole Willa Jo Zollar\'s HairStories, Doug Elkins\' Narcoleptic Lovers and Bridgman/Packer\'s Underlying. Dance students from throughout the department will be represented in Stephen Stone\'s ballet Rigadaun Nouveau, in new choreography by adjunct professor Niki Conraths-Lange and in the department\'s newest repertory work Round Dance, choreographed by guest artist Jan Van Dyke. Jan Van Dyke Dance Group was in residence in the Maggie Allesee Department of Dance for six days in January during which Van Dyke set Round Dance on dance majors selected by audition. Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer, commissioned to create a work for the Wayne State University Dance Company, were in residence for ten days in September 2004. The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Alumni Association will join the WSU Dance Alumni Association in hosting an Apres at Ruby\'s Kitchen, immediately following the Saturday, March 26, 8pm performance. College and department alumni and friends will have an opportunity to chat with the Wayne State University dancers and to meet the college\'s dean, Sharon Vasquez, as they enjoy light refreshments. For the 6th consecutive year, dancers from Wayne State University have been honored with a Gala Dance Concert Invitation to the American College Dance Festival\'s Central East Region, formerly Great Lakes Region, for their performance of Jan Van Dyke\'s Round Dance (1985), originally commissioned by the Laban Centre, London, UK. WSU has received National Commendations in biennial years for invited performances at the Kennedy Center in 2000, 2002 and 2004. The American College Dance Festival is the foremost leader in identifying outstanding university dance performance and choreography in the US. The Maggie Allesee Department of Dance is one of 63 exemplary dance institutions accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance and is a vital division of Wayne State\'s College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts.
