Off the wall: In a new book, photographer David Clements captures funky array of Detroit's urban folk art

Jerry Herron, professor of American Studies, commented extensively on a new book by David Clements titled "Talking Shops: Detroit's Commercial Folk Art" (Wayne State University Press). \"The perception of the city is that it\'s a desolate and desperate place; that violence, abandonment of the poor and racism only exists in Detroit,\" Herron says. \"David shows us that there\'s an unashamed self-confidence, an exuberance of color, design and message -- of life in the city.\" It is noted that Clements is planning to donate to the Walter P. Reuther Library a gospel concert poster he retrieved from a boarded-up building along with an archive of photos and memorabilia of city life. Clements' photography also appears in "Art in Detroit Public Places\" (Wayne State University Press), written by local art historian Dennis Nawrocki.
