Jacquelin Washington and Eugene Driker were unanimously elected by their colleagues to one-year terms as chair and vice chair respectively. Washington was elected to an eight-year term in 2001 and Driker was appointed to a four-year term by former Gov. John Engler in 2002 to fill a vacancy.
Washington, retired president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan, has distinguished herself as a community advocate serving on the boards of several non-profit organizations. She was the first African-American elected to serve as president of the national NOW-Legal Defense and Education Fund which litigates and educates on issues related to discrimination against women in employment and education. She was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame for her advocacy on behalf of women. Washington received a bachelor's degree from Fisk University and a master's degree in social work from Wayne State University.
Driker, one of the founders and a senior member of the law firm Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, P.L.L.C., has been an active volunteer in cultural and charitable activities in Detroit and in the Jewish community. A graduate of Wayne State University earning bachelor's and law degrees, he has maintained close ties to his alma mater serving as a member and vice chair of the Wayne State University Foundation Board of Directors, president of the Law Alumni Association and a member of the Law School's Committee of Visitors. Driker also currently serves on the Advisory Board of the university's Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies.
Also receiving unanimous votes to one-year terms as 2005 board officers were John L. Davis and Julie H. Miller.
Davis, re-elected treasurer of the board, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 1993. He is vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer at Wayne State.
Miller, re-elected secretary to the board, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 2001. She is secretary of the university and executive assistant to the president.
