Private firms could make city's future

In his business section column, Tom Walsh, gives a list of "good omens" for Detroit, including the following: "Wayne State University is expanding new housing, a technology park and a welcome center." Other examples are the proposed RiverWalk, Campus Martius Park, Ford Field and Comerica Park. But he says some business leaders ask the question. "Will all this investment in public spaces really spur private investment?" Walsh says it is now "up to private investors to decide whether Detroit shows enough promise to deliver a reasonable return on their cash." He points out that "the era of public spending on public spaces is over or fading fast."
