Everett's death leaves council divided

Political science professors Timothy Bledsoe and Lyke Thompson commented about the political ramifications to Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick following the death of Councilwoman Kay Everett and the resulting vacancy on the Detroit City Council. Bledsoe said the mayor's reelection chances or the passage of his proposals before the council should not be significantly affected. "In the past mayors have been judged not so much on their success of winning votes on council, but rather on their overall impression of how the city is doing well." Thompson predicted there would be a lot of political squabbles to fill the vacant council seat. "There will be a lot of interest, and somebody is likely to have the support of the mayor," he said. "It will be reflected in the campaign for replacement."
