News in brief from Upper Michigan

The abandoned Quincy Smelting Works site in Ripley, Mich., should be preserved because it is still largely intact, two history professors contend in a new book. The site would be perfect for interpreting the importance of railroads and shipping to the Keweenaw region, said Larry Lankton, a professor at Michigan Technological University. He is co-author with Wayne State history professor Charles Hyde of "Old Reliable: An Illustrated History of the Quincy Mining Company."
