WSU Student Council Program Board wins regional excellence award

The Wayne State University Student Council Program Board won the Excellence in Programming Award for schools with an annual programming budget over $75,000 at the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) Mid-America Regional Conference in Peoria, Ill., Nov. 1.

The award recognizes program boards in bringing entertainment to campuses during the 2002-03 school year. Any NACA Mid-America member school from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and West Virginia was able to submit an award bid. The four other finalists were Augustana College (Ill.), Central Michigan University, John Carroll University (Ohio) and Marshall University (WV).

The council, which formed at WSU in 1999, has a $110,000 annual budget. The 2002-03 Student Council Program Board included:

Mario Chaney of Detroit (public relations and marketing chair)

Nora Haji-Jama of Toronto, Ontario, Canada (arts and cultures chair)

Yasmin Fakhereddin of Windsor, Ontario, Canada (films chair)

Kathrenia Necole Peterson of Detroit (special events chair)

Tiffany Davis of Detroit (lectures chair)

Erin Brennan of Windsor, Ontario, Canada (member at large)

Michael Williams of Detroit (member at large).

The council advisor is Laura Pechta of Hillsdale, who is a campus life adviser in the Office of the Dean of Students.
