The Hillberry Theatre kicks off the theatre season with gala President's Preview

The Hilberry Theatre of Wayne State University hosted its 42nd Annual President's Preview on Saturday October 9, 2004 with a black tie gala. Highlights of the evening, planned by the understudies, a dedicated group of volunteers who support the theatres at Wayne, included a pre show reception, performance of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, and a post theatre dinner catered by Opus One.

In addition, the evening featured a special tribute to Olga F. Dworkin of Farmington Hills. Mrs. Dworkin is a longtime supporter of Wayne State University and is a past president of the understudies. An alumna of Wayne State University, Olga has participated on the Alumni Association Board, served as the first woman president of the Wayne State Fund, and was appointed by past WSU president George Gullen as chair of the Beautification Committee which put into place the trademark green canopy in front of Hilberry Theatre. She has also served as co-chair to the University Medical School Art Committee, placing sculptures in the courtyards of the medical center. In addition to her contributions to Wayne State University, Mrs.Dworkin has received awards for her work with the Michigan Kidney Foundation, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, and is a member of the Board of Gilda's Club of Metropolitan Detroit.

This year's President's Preview was held on the University Campus with a performance in the Hilberry Theatre, and a dinner hosted in a dramtic, specially constructed tent adjacent to the theatre on Hancock Street. Attendees were escorted into the theatre by tuzedo clad ushers and treated to 1920's jazz age music performed by student musicians of WSU, as well as a beautiful outdoor lighting display designed by Hillberry Company member Jeremy McDaniel, that transported the guests to a by gone era. Proceeds from the evening go to support the theatres at WSU.

Guests for the evening included WSU President, Dr. Irvin D. Reid, Provost, Dr. Nancy Barret, members of the Board of Governors and the President's Cabinet. The Chair of the event was MRs. Cameron Duncan of Bloomfield Hills. Members of the committee included current understudy President, Mrs. Henry Nickol of Birmingham, Mrs. Tomas Cunninghamm of Birmingham, Mrs. William Bostick of Bingham Farms, Mrs. Loretta Higgins Brown of Birmingham, Mrs. Frederick Clark of Grosse Pointe Shores, Mrs. Larry Fobes of Plymouth, Mrs. Lary Berkower of Southfield, Mrs. Richard Keramedjian of Orchard Lake and WSY Understudy Liaison, Beth Thibault.
