Wayne State Receives $1 Million to Increase Number of Minority Doctoral Students

Detroit, Mich. - An award from the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) will put $1 million into Wayne State Graduate School programs aiming to increase significantly the number of African-American, Hispanic and Native American/Alaskan Native students receiving doctoral degrees in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology.

The funding is part of a five-year, $5 million award made to the Michigan AGEP Alliance (MAA), a consortium led by the University of Michigan with primary partners including Wayne State University, Michigan State University and Western Michigan University.

The new funding will be used to recruit and retain minority students through career fair outreach, summer research programs, coordinated visits of students and faculty to partner campuses and programmatic improvements to prepare students for entering doctoral programs and ultimately careers as faculty.

The award also will allow Wayne State to provide an educational experience, adoptable by other graduate programs, that will enable under-represented students to become part of the next generation of leaders and innovators. "We will offer a series of programs that will help develop the skills and knowledge students need to become creative researchers, educators and leaders," said Steven Salley, associate dean of the Wayne State Graduate School and co-principal investigator for the consortium project.

Collectively the MAA partners have extensive experience in analyzing data and an evaluation model will be developed to measure and analyze in-depth outcomes among different student groups, partner institutions and other AGEP alliances.

Wayne State University offers more than 350 academic programs through 12 schools and colleges to more than 33,000 students in metropolitan Detroit. With nearly 13,000 students in 60-plus doctoral degree programs, 130 master's degree programs and 30 certificate, specialist and professional programs, Wayne State is one of the largest graduate schools in the country, ranking among the top 10 nationally.
