What's new in aging? Find out at the IOG Open House Oct. 21

An increasing percentage of the American population is aging. What does this trend mean for science and society? The WSU Institute of Gerontology (IOG) invites you to find out at the Annual Fall Open House on Thursday, Oct, 21, 3:00-5:00 p.m. IOG graduate students will present their research in a special poster competition and visitors can learn more about NIH pre-doctoral training and post-doctoral fellowship programs over refreshments.

Highlights of this year's poster session include:

  • Gender differences in mental health among elderly, African American Detroiters--Does neighborhood matter?

  • Is it possible for people to learn new skills even with age-related cognitive impairments?

  • How can couples help each other to achieve healthier lifestyles through exercise?

  • Does being in a relationship protect women against heart disease?

  • How can we stop the bias against elderly people with low literacy in Alzheimer's testing?

  • Is there something special about Christian caregiving?

  • Does grandparenting take a toll on the health of grandparents who have primary caregiving responsibility?

  • Do we feel more pain when we're depressed or anxious?

  • Is there a better way to design interactive voice response systems for older adults?

  • How can nurses help elderly people to manage their blood pressure better?

The Institute of Gerontology is part of Wayne State University's Division of Research and is dedicated to social, behavioral, and cognitive neuroscience research into lifespan health issues, especially among minority populations in urban environments. The IOG brings together faculty and students from such diverse academic disciplines as psychology, neuropsychology, political science, economics, engineering, sociology, and medical anthropology.

The institute is located on the second floor of the Knapp Building: 87 East Ferry (at the corner of John R). For more information, call Jennifer Mendez at (313) 577-2297 or e-mail j.mendez@wayne.edu. Visit us on the Web at: www.iog.wayne.edu.
