Latinos nurture ethnic pride

An article that looks into the ethnic identity of Latinos in the United States notes that Latino parents are more prepared to allow their children to be bicultural - both Latino and American - than in the past. Debbie Hernandez Jozefowicz-Simbeni, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, says children should be encouraged to celebrate their heritage. "It's very important and salient to promote cultural pride," she points out. "The flip side of that is when you are ashamed of your own cultural background and view it negatively, it can have a negative impact on kids."
