12 Black Scholars to tell Canton how they overcame discrimination

William Sanders Scarborough was the star of a forum on 12 Black Scholars sponsored Oct. 1 by Canton's Mayor's Literacy Commission. Michele Ronnick, Wayne State classics professor, brought her traveling photographic exhibit to Canton dispelling the misconception that black people are not capable or interested in classical studies. "Scarborough was born into slavery and ends up writing a Greek textbook," said Ronnick. "This shocks everyone who believes they're not smart enough to learn Greek and Latin. He learned to read and write in secret with a book hidden under his arm. He's got to break the law to study."
