Healthy debate: Nurses, administrators square off over nurse-patient ratios and how best to fill them

The Wayne State University College of Nursing reports that the nation had 1.9 million registered nurses in 2000, 6 percent fewer than it needed. The shortage is expected to rise to 12 percent by 2010 and 29 percent by 2020.
