DETROIT - September 16, 2004 - WDET announces its new fall programming line-up that builds on its popular music variety and news magazine programs. In a plan to position itself for future growth and stability, WDET is adding an additional 16 hours of locally produced programming to its prime time line-up. The new program schedule preserves the eclectic nature of the station with 23 different programs. WDET's new program schedule takes effect on Friday, September 17, 2004.
Two hours of WDET's award-winning music mix has been added to weekdays. The highly acclaimed Judy Adams Program, now in its 30th year, begins an hour earlier airing 9 to 11AM. The newly added Chuck Horn Program will provide listeners with midday music variety from 11AM to 1PM followed by the popular Martin Bandyke Program, which now airs from 1 to 4PM. This new seven-hour music variety block will continue to present live music performances from WDET's Studio A, artist interviews, ticket and music giveaways and special features.
The new programming schedule allows the station's 200,000 weekly listeners to hear more of what they like best. With more than 120 hours of locally produced programming, WDET bucks the trend of nationally formatted commercial radio. WDET, a jewel on the Detroit dial for more than 55 years, has a global reputation for the diverse sounds and in-depth news it delivers every day. Recognized with more than 40 awards since 2003, HOUR Detroit magazine has named WDET "Detroit's Best Radio Station" and this year it was nominated as "Station of the Year" by Radio & Records.
"WDET is positioning itself for continued growth and success," said Caryn Mathes, WDET General Manager. "The station continues to evolve to meet the challenges of the ever changing media landscape, that is why we are focusing on our greatest strengths - the music variety programs, local news and NPR newsmagazines."
Detroit Public Radio has faced many of the same fundraising challenges as other non-profits throughout the area. On average, only about six percent of WDET's listeners financially support the station. The new programming will help the station keep costs down in addition to pleasing loyal listeners.
"Over the years, WDET has been able to stay true to its mission while responding to economic realities," said Judy Adams, WDET Program Director. "The new program schedule makes WDET stronger both programmatically and financially."
The new weekday WDET fall program line-up is below. The revised WDET program schedule including Saturdays and Sundays will be released tomorrow, September 17, 2004.
