Detroit Docs coming to Wayne State University, Nov. 11-14

Wayne State University, in the heart of Detroit's cultural center, is the newest venue for the Detroit Docs International Film Festival; the university will kick off the documentary festival with a gala on Thursday, Nov. 11 at Wayne's Welcome Center on Woodward Avenue.

"Wayne State is proud to help bring this international festival to our city and our campus. Documentaries are enjoying a renaissance around the globe, and Detroit Docs will enrich and engage the people of metro Detroit. The festival will draw filmmakers and viewers from around the world. These documentaries, and the workshops that will accompany them, will stimulate an electric exchange of ideas and information in an exciting format that will benefit students, scholars and the public," said Wayne State President Irvin D. Reid.

This year, Detroit Docs will feature approximately 100 films from all over the world, with approximately a third of the films screening on the Wayne State campus. Detroit Docs will also screen films at the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Detroit Film Center and the Birmingham 8.

The juried documentary films, chosen through an international competition, will be shown on campus from Friday, Nov. 12 to Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004. The university will also host lectures and workshops on the films, featuring Wayne State experts and filmmakers. Wayne State will feature student films and awards on Sunday, November 14.

Detroit Docs debuted two years ago, bringing a wealth of world-class documentaries and many of their creators to Motown. The festival has featured such academy-award nominated films as "Spellbound" and "Sister Helen." In its first two seasons, the festival grew to feature 60 films from 10 countries, drew 30 directors to town and brought an audience of 3,000 people to see the films.
