Wayne State University Department of Music announces their 2004 Professional Artists Concert and Lecture Series

DETROIT, MI (August 6, 2004) - Music at Wayne for Fall 2004 opens with a special performance by the Peter Soave Sextet on Friday, September 17, 2004. Sextet members Peter Soave, bayan; Victoria Haltom, violin; Velda Kelly, violin; Barbara Zmich, viola; Nadine Deleury, cello; and Marion Hayden, bass will be performing works by Piazzolla and Gardel. The concert is being held at 11:45 a.m. in the Schaver Music Recital Hall, located at 480 W. Hancock in the Old Main Building. Admission to this performance is free and open to the public. Wayne State Music is presenting a diverse and distinguished line-up of guest artists on their 2004 Professional Artists Concert and Lecture Series. Lecturer and artist Robert Jones will be presenting his popular "American Roots Music" at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, September 24. To kick off the month of October, WSU Music is presenting a special lecture by Detroit Free Press Music Critic and Arts Reporter Mark Stryker (Oct. 1, 11:45 a.m.) and a concert by 2004 Arts Achievement Award Recipient and guitarist Charles Postlewate (Oct. 1, 7 p.m.). Other October highlights include guest soloist Olivier Latry, organist for Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral, with the WSU Concert Chorale and the Archdiocesan Choir (Oct. 5, 7 p.m., Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament); A "Masters of the Baroque" program performed by the WSU Concertante (Oct. 8, 11:45 a.m.); Jazz Pianist and faculty member Matt Michaels (Oct. 15, 11:45 a.m.); and guest speaker Brian McCollum, Detroit Free Press Pop Music Critic (Oct. 22, 11:45 a.m.).

The Department of Music proudly presents violinist Laura Roelofs, a recent addition to the WSU String Faculty, in a performance featuring Stravinsky's "Divertimento" at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, November 5. In residence at Wayne will be legendary choral conductor Paul Salamunovich (Nov. 10-12). Maestro Salamunovich will be conducting clinics and workshops for WSU students, as well as Detroit-area high school choirs and directors. November also brings the United States Air Force Winds (Nov. 12, 11:45 a.m.) and jazz trumpeter Johnny Trudell (Nov. 18, 7 p.m.) to campus.

Guest and faculty performances in December include pianist and WSU alumnus Wesley Fishwick (Dec. 8, 11:45 a.m.) and a performance of Bartok's "Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion" by pianists Robert Conway and alumna Jia Li and percussionists Keith Claeys and Samuel Tundo (Dec. 10, 11:45 a.m.).

  • WSU Keyboard Day (Oct. 5, 1 to 5:30 p.m.)

  • Choral Workshop with Paul Salamunovich (Nov. 12, 9:45 a.m. to 12 p.m.)

  • 38th Annual Salute Concert to Downtown Detroit (Nov. 23, 12 p.m., Old St. Mary's Church, Greektown)
