Wayne State University Academy of Scholars elects two new members

Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State University Academy of Scholars has elected two new members to be admitted in the fall semester. They are Professors Boris S. Mordukhovich and Blaine C. White.

Boris S. Mordukhovich of Ann Arbor, Mich., is a renowned mathematician and leader in the field of optimization, nonsmooth analysis, variational analysis, control theory and their applications. Mordukhovich joined the department of mathematics at Wayne State in 1989. Well known for his extremely high quality scholarship and productivity, his accomplishments include two monographs, two patents and more than 150 refereed papers in leading scientific journals. During his tenure at Wayne State, he has supervised nine Ph.D. students. Mordukhovich has earned continued support by the National Science Foundation, has served on editorial boards of eight prestigious international journals and has been the keynote speaker at many international conferences. He received the Wayne State Career Development Chair in 1992, the Board of Governors Faculty Recognition Award in 1998, the Distinguished Faculty Fellowship in 1999 and, in 2004, he received the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award.

Blaine C. White, M.D., of Howell, Mich., is one of the most prominent national and international figures in the field of emergency medicine, and the products of this career have been substantial. White has more than 70 original contributions in peer-reviewed journals and has received more than $6.5 million dollars in extramural research grants over the course of his career. He has devoted his professional career to the study of ischemic and traumatic brain injury and has been a national and international leader in developing new knowledge in this area. The products of his research have shaped clinical practice and the science of brain resuscitation would not be where it is today without his significant contributions. White is clearly one of the top three or four researchers in the world in the field of emergency medicine.

He has served as an NIH grant reviewer since 1991 and also serves as a national grant reviewer for brain injury for the American Heart Association. He has served on the editorial boards of all the major emergency medicine journals. Most recently, White's outstanding contributions have been recognized by his election to the National Academies of Science Institute of Medicine, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a physician. In addition to this honor, he is also the recipient of the American College of Emergency Medicine Research and Education Award in 1988 and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine's Hal Jayne Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.

Founded in 1979, the Academy of Scholars recognizes excellence in scholarship and creative achievements by faculty members of WSU. Over the past 25 years, 58 members have been accepted into the Academy. Fifty are currently on-campus active members. Membership is for life.
