Two graduating seniors to receive special honors at Wayne State University commencement, May 6

Two graduating Wayne State University seniors who have distinguished themselves academically and through service to the university and community will receive a prestigious Howard A. Donnelly Award during commencement ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in Cobo Arena. The students, Kathy Borovicka of Amhersturg, Ont., and Charles Stamboulian of Farmington Hills, are among approximately 3,000 degree candidates in WSU's May graduating class.

The Donnelly Award is given annually to a man and to a woman in the spring graduating class in recognition for outstanding contributions to the university and to the community in the areas of student activities, leadership and service, consistent with superior scholarship. The two award recipients will address the assembled graduates and guests at commencement.

Borovicka will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in honors biological sciences, summa cum laude, with a co-major in university honors. She has been on the College of Science Dean's List each term since enrolling at Wayne State in 2001. She is a tutor and supplemental instruction leader at WSU's Academic Success Center and a member of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory.

In recognition of her volunteer work on behalf of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Borovicka received Canada's International Year of Volunteers Award and a Hearts That Light the Way Award in 2001 and 2002, respectively. She also has performed volunteer work at a residence for persons with disabilities and at an occupational therapy clinic.

Other volunteer activities have included fundraising events for Habitat for Humanity, the Terry Fox Run, and Walk Toward Independence. She also was a volunteer assistant at Harper University Hospital and at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. She is a tutor and supplemental instruction leader at WSU's Academic Success Center and a member of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory.

Stamboulian will receive a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, magna cum laude. He majored in secondary education and English and minored in mathematics. Currently completing his student teaching assignment at Southfield High School, he also was a volunteer mathematics tutor at Wilson Elementary School in Ferndale and has served as a student teacher at Beaubien Elementary School in Detroit.

While president of the Society of Armenian Students at Wayne State, he headed projects to raise funds for a hospital in Armenia and for the Armenian Community Center in Dearborn. Other community service activities include participation in the "Motor City Makeover" project in Detroit and the Farmington area Goodfellows canned food drive. He also served as a volunteer camp counselor at the Armenian Youth Federation junior seminar in Pennsylvania.

Stamboulian participated in men's cross country at WSU for four years and was a member of the team that won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2001. He twice earned NCAA Academic All-America honors.
