The Studio Theatre, on the campus of Wayne State University, will present Antigone In New York by Janusz Glowacki. Antigone In New York is a gripping introspective into the world of our nation's homeless. Penned in 1993, Antigone tells the story of three immigrants who find themselves in the so-called land of opportunity with no home or identity. They are searching for a way to steal the body of their friend and give it a proper burial. Reminiscent of the themes in Edward Bond's infamous play Saved, Glowacki takes a look at the apathy humans feel, by nature, toward those who are less fortunate. This aids in our ability to ignore the problem of homelessness in America. Antigone compels its audience to face the gravity of the homeless situation.
PhD candidate, D. Christy Houston will direct. Houston's body of work features last season's Black Theatre Program production of Pearl Cleage's Hospice, at the Studio Theatre. Antigone in New York features a strong cast that includes Sarah Switanowski (Warren), Patrick Hanley (Redford), Joe Kvoriak (Sterling Heights), Jerry Belanger (Plymouth), and Gregory Harris (Dearborn).
Antigone in New York also features scenic design by Kevin Beltz (Eastpointe), and lighting design by Elizabeth Cooper (Grosse Pointe). Antigone in New York plays at the Studio Theatre, located downstairs from the Hilberry Theatre, at 4743 Cass Avenue, April 8-10 and 15-17. Performances are at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8, $6 for students, seniors, Wayne State faculty and staff, and members of the Wayne State University Alumni Association. Special discounts are also available for groups of 15 or more.
