The Fourth Annual Louise Heck-Rabi Scholarship Award plays will be presented in the Studio Theatre on the campus of Wayne State University. Two award winning one-act plays will be performed February 19-21 and February 26-28 at 8pm. Graduate and undergraduate students will be directing and performing in the world premier of the plays. The Heck-Rabi competition is open to both undergraduate and graduate students that are majoring or express great interest in English or Theatre. Students submitted original scripts in May 2003 for judging. Staged readings and work with theatre faculty members were held in the fall and winners were selected. Winners are awarded a cash prize.
The winners of this year's scholarship competition are:
Life Game by Blair L. Franklin, an Alumni of the Theatre Department.
A lawyer, an ex-convict and a factory worker. As the three friends gather together after being apart for ten years, an interesting story unfolds. The truth that ensues will change their lives forever.
· Storm Warning by Isaac C. Williams, Jr., an undergraduate English Major.
Family bonds run very strongly in two households as they are faced with compelling issues. Each is headed by a patriarch who is the foundation for keeping their families together.
This competition is made possible through an endowment from the estate of Louise Heck-Rabi. Heck-Rabi was the founder and active member of the Michigan Poets and Playwrights Society. She completed a Ph.D. in English from Wayne State University in 1976. Rock The World is her own one-act comedy that was performed Off-Broadway in 1973. She also wrote "Women Filmmakers: A Critical Reception." She loved theatre but more importantly loved to work with students who shared the same passion.
The Louise Heck-Rabi Scholarship Award Competition is facilitated through the collaborative efforts of Dr. Phoebe Mainster of the English Department and Cary Leiter of the Theatre Department. Leiter is a first year Ph.D. candidate at Wayne State.
The Studio theatre is located downstairs from the Hilberry Theatre. Admission is Free.
