Representatives from the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association, in conjunction with Partnership for Learning, are participating in an initiative designed to help those who expect to qualify for admission to a college or technical school and need financial aid assistance beginning with the fall 2004 semester. This first-ever Michigan College Goal Sunday will be Sunday, Feb. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Michigan College Goal Sunday is a new statewide initiative to raise awareness of the availability of financial assistance and provide free information and assistance to families applying for college financial aid. Professionals from Detroit-area colleges and universities, headed up by financial aid administrators from Wayne State University, will be on hand to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for 2004-2005. Students should attend with their parent(s) or guardian(s), who must bring their completed 2002 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 Forms and any other 2003 income and benefit information.
Financial aid administrators are very excited about the new initiative. According to Catherine Kay, interim director of student financial aid at Wayne State University, "This is an opportunity for financial aid experts to work one-on-one with Detroit-area students to help them get the financial aid they need to pay for college. Filling out the forms correctly and on time is the first, most important step in the process."
