The Hilberry Theatre presents the Detroit premiere of John Strand's award- winning comedy Lovers and Executioners. The production opens on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 8 p.m. "This is an opportunity to see a new play that is a little like Moliere and a little like the film The First Wives Club," says director David Hay. Lovers and Executioners is a timeless comedy that speaks to contemporary society. "Some of the play is very funny and many of the issues are still very much with us," says Hay.
Lovers and Executioners is a riotous battle of the sexes exposing attempted murder, revenge and a love stronger than any trial. When Bernard uncovers evidence of Julie's infidelity, he abandons her on a deserted island to die. He then returns to his life in a quiet French village with heavy guilt and intent to marry the most sought-after woman in town. Bernard's struggle matched with the antics of other townsfolk makes this a comedy about the strength of heart.
John Strand translated French writer Montfleury's 17th-century poetry into 20th-century verse for this commedia dell'arte inspired comedy. Strand transformed Montfleury's original La Femme Juge et Partie ("The Wife, Judge and Accuser") into a modern piece focusing on questions of justice, revenge and the role of women in society.
The Hilberry Theatre is proud to have original Detroit native and accomplished director, David Hay lend his talent to Lovers and Executioners. Hay has an impressive educational background including a BA in English from Central College, Iowa; an MA in English (Restoration Drama) from Bowling Green State University, Ohio; a PhD in English (Shakespeare, Dramatic Literature, Seventeenth-Century Studies) from Bowling Green State University; and a MFA in Directing from Ohio University. He was the artistic director of the Center Repertory Company for nine years and is the founder and director of the Old Globe Theatre and MFA program at the University of San Diego. Hay has directed more than seventy productions in professional regional and educational theatres across the country. His distinguished career has also included study at The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England and a research grant from The British Museum. David Hay's visit is being sponsored by the Leonard Leone Guest Artist Fund at the Hilberry Theatre.
Lovers and Executioners was the 1999 winner of The Helen Hayes Award in Washington D.C. The production received The Charles MacArthur Prize for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Supporting Actor.
