Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid has announced the appointment of Harvey Hollins III, as vice president for government affairs effective January 14, 2004.
Hollins, who holds a master's degree in public policy from the University of Michigan's Ford School of Public Policy and a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Kalamazoo College, is leaving an eight-year post at the American Association of Retired Persons to join Wayne State. He also has worked with the Michigan House of Representatives as a fiscal analyst and served as a community aide to the Department of Family Housing at the University of Michigan.
"We are pleased to have someone with Harvey Hollins' political experience and communications savvy to head our government affairs office," said Reid. "His ability to cultivate and maintain close relationships will help us explain our mission to legislators, policy makers and Michiganders alike."
As vice president for government affairs, Hollins will review relevant university issues and develop and implement university-wide policies. He will help to educate legislators and to promote appreciation and support of the university's programs and objectives. Hollins also will provide advice and counsel to the university's Board of Governors and to other university officials.
In addition, he will establish channels to allow the university to play a critical role in legislative discussions that affect Wayne State's interests.
"I am anticipating the challenge of working in a dynamic academic and cultural center, and contributing to Wayne State's continued growth and success," said Hollins.
Wayne State University is a premier institution offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to more than 33,000 students.
