Prominent sociologist and educator Gilberto CÃ rdenas speaking at Wayne State University
Professor Gilberto CÃ rdenas, assistant provost and director of the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, is speaking on Nov. 24 at Wayne State University. The public lecture titled "New Directions in Ethnic Studies: Latino Studies in the New Millennium," will be held at 12 - 1:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the David Adamany Undergraduate Library, at the main campus.
Sponsored by the Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies (CBS), in Wayne State's College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs (CULMA), the lecture is free and open to the general public.
In addition to teaching and serving as director of the Institute for Latino Studies, CÃ rdenas has been named three times as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine in recognition of his pursuit of scholarship money and improvement of educational opportunities for minority students.
CÃ rdenas, a Julian Samora Chair in Latino Studies, received his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Notre Dame and is the author, editor, co-author or co-editor of eight books and monographs including Loz Mojados: The Wetback Story (with Julian Samora and Jorge Bustamante). He also has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and as chapters in books.
