The Studio Theatre, on the campus of Wayne State University, will open Edward Albee's Seascape at 8pm on November 20. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for 1975,
Seascape was originally presented at the Shubert Theatre in New York City, opening January 26, 1975. This is American playwright, Edward Albee's, second play to win a Pulitzer. Other works by Albee include: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Zoo Story, and The Goat, Or, Who's Sylvia?
Nancy and Charlie are on a deserted island, now retired and waiting for some sustained action. They discuss their marriage, their dreams, and their possibilities. Soon a couple of unexpected visitors show up. The play is an examination of life, ideals, dreams, and personal prejudices.
Director Hsiu-Wei Hu (Taipei, Taiwan) will direct his second production at the Studio Theatre. Hu is a second year PhD candidate who has traveled extensively in the United States and comes here with vast performance experience from Taiwan. After completing his degree he plans to go back to Taiwan and share the knowledge he has learned here through teaching. Hu's philosophy while directing Seascape and a guideline that he has followed for himself is summed up here. "If you want to do something in your life don't hesitate, just do it. Don't be afraid."
Cast members include: Sarah Korson (Pleasant Ridge) as Nancy, Dan Watson (Woodhaven) as Charlie, Mark Trotter (Birmingham) as Leslie, and Deborah Joy Winans (Detroit) as Sarah. Seascape also features scenic design by Claudette Mompalao (Swiftwater, PA), costume design by Jen Rybinski (Rochester), lighting design by Adrienne Brady (Utica/Sterling Heights), and sound design by Neil Koivu (Ferndale).
Seascape plays at the Studio Theatre located downstairs at the Hilberry Theatre at 4743 Cass Avenue. Performance times are November 20-22 & 28, 8pm; November 29 2pm & 8pm. Tickets are $8, $6 for students, seniors, Wayne State University faculty and staff, and members of the Wayne State University Alumni Association.
