Remember the Titans coach speaks at WSU Homecoming festivities Oct. 8

Football Coach Herman Boone, whose inspirational story was captured in the Denzel Washington film Remember the Titans, will speak at noon, Oct. 8., in the Student Center Building as a part of Homecoming Week at Wayne State University.

Boone's presentation about triumphing over adversity, and the benefits of diversity and teamwork, is sponsored by the Student Alumni Association.

The free event is open to the public. Tickets will be available after Sept. 30 at Alumni House, 441 Ferry Mall, or from the Dean of Students Office in Room 351, Student Center Building.

Remember the Titans tells the story of the 1971 racial tensions in Alexandria, Va., as three schools were integrated to form the T.C. Williams High School Titans. The former rivalries between the schools, coupled with the strain between the black and white players, resulted in a team that was far from united. Things escalated when Boone, assistant coach of the former T.C. Williams High School, was named head coach of the Titans, passing over Bill Yoast, the local favorite and successful head coach of the former Hammond High. Yoast's supporters were angered by Boone's appointment, which was seen as a gesture of goodwill to the black community.

The two coaches put aside their prejudices, unified their players and became one of the best teams in Virginia, compiling a 13-0 record. They won the state championship.
