Wayne State University to award full-ride scholarships to Math Corps participants in post blackout ceremony

Wayne State University will award 14 Presidential Scholarships to Detroit Public Schools students involved with the university's Math Corps program in a ceremony on Friday, September 19.

The ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Wayne State's Community Arts Auditorium on Cass Avenue on the main campus. The ceremony was originally scheduled for August 15 but was postponed due to last month's blackout.

The scholarship award program is an attempt to build on the legacy of Math Corps by offering the prestigious scholarships to Math Corps students.

We are happy to be able to help continue the education of our Math Corps students right here at Wayne State, said Steve Kahn, Math Corps director and professor. We look forward to more Math Corps students being the recipient of scholarships in the future.

The Presidential Scholarship covers tuition and partial room and board expenses in one of Wayne State's residence halls. The scholarship is currently valued at more than $23,000 for four years at Wayne State.

Math Corps is a six-week long summer program in which Detroit Public Schools students participate from 5th through 12th grade. During the program, middle school students are tutored by high school students, who in turn, are mentored by college students.

Wayne State University is a premier institution of higher education offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to more than 31,000 students in metropolitan Detroit.
