WDET - 101.9 FM to air five-part local news series "Separate Detroits" on June 23- 27

Special Series Focuses On History Of Segregation In Detroit Area

DETROIT - June 19, 2003 - WDET's award-winning news department will air a special series called "Separate Detroits" during Morning Edition and All Things Considered on June 23-27. This five-part series, more than six months in the making, explores various facets of the problem of segregation in Detroit, from the repercussions of the Detroit area being the most racially segregated metropolitan area in the country, to what is unique about Detroit's segregation history and what challenges are ahead for the region.

"This kind of series represents one of the best, and rare, things local public radio stations can do," says Joan Silvi, WDET News Director. "We can stretch out for months and dig deep into a subject to bring our listeners an intelligent, in-depth, local look at a serious issue."

Each of the five segments will be broadcast during Morning Edition at 6:30am and 8:30am and All Things Considered at 4:50pm and 6:50pm.

The series consists of:
  • Monday, June 23 - What's unique about Detroit's segregation history, Celeste Headlee reporting
  • Tuesday, June 24 - Segregation's impact on Detroiters' access to quality health care, Craig Fahle reporting
  • Wednesday, June 25 - Suburban vs. minority development in Detroit's revitalization, Quinn Klinefelter reporting
  • Thursday, June 26 - Educating the next generation of metro Detroiters about racial identity and segregation, Joan Silvi reporting
  • Friday, June 27 - Hopes for integration, Jerome Vaughn reporting
